BBC Earth is a documentary subscription television channel featuring premium factual programming. The channel is wholly owned and operated by BBC studios.

BBC Earth consists of:

Documentaries: Planet Earth, Planet Earth II, The Blue Planet, Frozen Planet ect.

Podcasts: BBC Earth podcast

  • A dedicated YouTube channel
  • A dedicated website
  • A BBC Earth Experience 
  • BBC Earth Kids

Synergy: Companies working collaboratively either in house or external (vertically or horizontally) to produce a product/make it more successful

e.g McDonald's having a synergetic relationship- promotes the film but also the happy meals
- Warner Bros having a synergetic relationship with The lego company = The Lego movie 1 & 2

  • BBC work in synergy with many social media platforms to promote their content and website to appeal to different audiences. e.g. Facebook, Youtube, Twitter (X)

As well as advertising through the main website, Sir David Attenborough has his own dedicated section of the website.

  • BBC Earth appeals to a wide range of audiences, they have a show about dinosaurs for the younger demographic as they could possibly use animation and graphics that would appeal to a younger demographic.

Both the BBC Earth websites and BBC iPlayer are interactive, allowing fans to watch trailers and learn more about the BBC Earth franchise. Full episodes are available via a link to BBC iPlayer.
  • The BBC also have their own magazine dedicated to the Earth segment, to advertise various programmes, podcasts and experiences.

The BBC uses various platforms to promote their content and appeal to different demographics and audiences:

Merchandising

BBC offer a range of merchandise available for fans to buy via the BBC Earth virtual store or their website.  
  • Selling merchandise also helps fund future BBC projects and programmes.
  • They also have a sustainable merchandise section in partnership with Teemill (synergy)
  • BBC Earth have a synergetic relationship with John Lewis to create fashion products

Answer:
BBC Earth use horizontal integration because they are a subsidiary of BBC a conglomerate and they use synergy with their partnership with Teemill to create sustainable merchandise for their fanbase and maximise the audience reach because this will maximise the success of the subsidiary BBC Earth.
