Impact of online distribution

Music and television can now be downloaded, streamed or simulcasted- it is available wherever, whenever.

Simulcasting:

when a media product is broadcasted both online and via a traditional medium at the same time. e.g ( football broadcasted on sky sports and the radio)

Time shifting:

The recording of programming to a storage medium ro be viewed or listened to after the live broadcasting e.g ( ITV+1, Channel 4)


Narrowcast Channels:

Television channels that distribute special interest (niche) content e.g (XD on tv targeting boys 7-11)

LoveFilm

  • Acquired by Amazon.com 2011, the service had reached 2 million subscribers. It also claimed over 70,000 titles, and over 4 million DVD, Blu-ray or game rentals per month in five countries. 
  • It then became the leading online DVD rental and streaming outlet in the UK and Europe
  • LoveFilm offered a download service alongside postal delivery but this ceased on 23rd Febuary 2009- they also had a subscription process (monthly rental plans , unlimited streaming-only account)
